Wildcats battle crosstown rivals.
Friday night was the scene of the latest rivalry between Northview and Southview. The battleground was the baseball field at Northview and the contest was hard fought. The atmosphere in the ballpark was electric. The fans were treated to hotdogs, entertainment, and a tennis ball toss.
The action on the field was electric, too. The Wildcats jumped on the Cougars early, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Schaffer started the slugfest with a single to left. Zach Strass hit the ball hard to short for an infield single. With Schaffer getting double up on a misplayed ball by Southview shortstop, Derek Andrzejczak hit a 2 out shot up the middle but was denied an RBI on Strauss falling on his way home. Brian Koehl continued the two out rally with a single to left scoring Strauss. With two on and two out, Matt Colville ripped a double in the gap in center field clearing the bases and giving the Wildcats a 3 - 0 lead.
Southview answered with 4 runs in the top of the second.
The bottom of the third saw some more scoring action for the Wildcats. Strauss started the 3 run inning with a double to right. He scored on Andrzejczak double in the gap in center. Andzejczak moved to third on Colville's smash that handcuffed the Cougar's shortstop. Wes Jones hits a ball back to third and the Cougar third baseman tries to make a play on Andrzejczak at home which resulted in a rundown. Andrzejczak scores when the Cougar catcher throws the ball into left field. Colville move to third on that error. With runners on second and third, Cam Ely squeezes home Colville for the third run of the inning and a 6-4 lead.
Southview kept the rivalry intact by adding 3 in the top of the fourth to take a 7-6 lead.
Eddie Bellanca lead off the fourth with a single to right, stole second, was moved to third on a Schaffer single, and scored on a Strauss sacrifice fly to right. At the end of 4, the Wildcats tied the ballgame at 7.
Going into the bottom of the sixth the Wildcats were not going to be denied another goose egg. Danny Jaques hit a single to lead off the inning. Jaques is moved to second on Bellanca's sacrifice bunt. Schaffer knocks a single to right, scoring Jaques in what would prove to be the game winning RBI. Strauss clears the bases with a double. With Andrzejczak and Koehl both getting on base, Colville is hit by a pitch which allowed Strauss to score and gave the Wildcats a 10 - 7 lead.
That proved to be the difference and the Wildcats win with the final score 10 -7
Brian Koehl went the distance for the Wildcats and had six strikeouts.
Northview pushes its league record to 3-1 while the Cougars dropped to 2-1.
